Online betting in India, explained from the start.

Online betting means staking money on the result of a sports event or casino game through a website. You pick an outcome, the odds set what it pays, and the bet settles when the result is known. This guide covers odds, the main bet types, how money moves in and out, how much to stake and what the law says.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. Online betting means staking money on the result of a sports event or casino game, and every bet has an event, a market, a selection, odds and a stake.
  2. At decimal odds of 2.50, ₹100 returns ₹250 if it wins, and 2.50 implies a 40% chance.
  3. Prices include a margin, so the implied chances of every outcome add up to more than 100%.
  4. A common rule of thumb keeps each stake between 1% and 5% of your betting bankroll.
  5. The Online Gaming Act 2025 restricts online money games nationally, some states have their own bans, and winnings are taxed.

What is online betting?

Online betting is placing a stake on the outcome of a sports event or casino game through a website or app. Every bet has five parts: the event, the market, your selection, the odds and your stake. At King Exchange you open an account on WhatsApp instead of filling in a sign-up form.

How do betting odds work?

Decimal odds show what you get back for every ₹1 staked, stake included. At 2.50, ₹100 returns ₹250 if it wins. Dividing 1 by the odds gives the implied probability: 2.50 implies a 40% chance, and 1.40 implies about 71%.

Prices always include a margin. If both sides of a 50/50 contest are offered at 1.90, each implies 52.6%, so the two add up to 105.3%. That extra 5.3% is how the bookmaker earns over time.

What are the main types of bet?

The bets you'll see most often are match winner, totals, handicap, cricket session and fancy markets, in-play bets and exchange bets where you back or lay. Beginners usually start with match winner, because there is only one question to answer.

  • Match winner

Pick who wins. It's the simplest bet and the best place to start.

How much should I bet?

Only bet money you could lose without it affecting your bills or savings. A common rule of thumb is to keep each stake to between 1% and 5% of your betting bankroll, and to stop for the day once you've lost an amount you set in advance.

Example

With a ₹5,000 monthly bankroll, 1% to 5% means stakes of ₹50 to ₹250. A run of ten losing bets at ₹100 still leaves you ₹4,000 for the rest of the month.
