Casino table games: rules and house edge.

Table games are the casino classics played against the house: blackjack, roulette, baccarat, Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker and Sic Bo. This guide covers how each one plays, what every main bet pays and how big the house edge is, from about 0.5% in blackjack to 5.26% in American roulette.

Key takeaways

  • Six classic games: blackjack, roulette, baccarat, Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker and Sic Bo.
  • Blackjack with basic strategy has the lowest house edge, about 0.5%. American roulette is the highest at 5.26%.
  • On a single-zero roulette wheel, red or black wins 48.6% of the time.
  • Live tables have a real dealer on camera. RNG tables use software and deal faster.

01Beat the dealer to 21

How do you play blackjack?

Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Number cards count their face value, jacks, queens and kings count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11. You hit, stand, double or split, then the dealer plays by fixed rules. A win pays 1:1, and a two-card 21 usually 3:2.

  1. 1Place your bet. You and the dealer each get two cards, with one dealer card face up.
  2. 2Hit to take another card, stand to keep your total, double to double your bet for one more card, or split a pair into two hands.
  3. 3The dealer then plays by fixed rules. Beat the dealer's total without going over 21 and you win even money.

Always

  • Split aces and eights.
  • Stand on a hard 17 or more.

Never

  • Split tens or fives.
  • Take insurance. Its house edge is around 7%.

02Bet on where the ball lands

How does roulette work?

You bet on where the ball will land, from a single number to red or black, and the fewer numbers a bet covers, the more it pays: red or black pays 1:1, a straight-up number 35:1. European roulette has one zero and a 2.70% edge; American adds a double zero, at 5.26%.

  1. 1Place chips on the layout before the croupier closes betting.
  2. 2The wheel spins and the ball settles in one pocket.
  3. 3Winning bets are paid at the odds below. Everything else is collected.

03Player or Banker, closest to 9

How do you play baccarat?

Bet on the Player hand, the Banker hand or a tie. The hand closest to 9 wins; tens and face cards count zero, aces count one, and only the last digit of a total counts. Banker pays 0.95 to 1 after a 5% commission, with an edge of about 1.06%.

  1. 1Bet on Player, Banker or Tie.
  2. 2Each hand gets two cards. A third card is drawn by fixed rules, so you make no decisions after betting.
  3. 3The hand closer to 9 wins.

04Poker against the dealer

How does Casino Hold'em work?

Casino Hold'em is Texas Hold'em played against the dealer instead of other players. You place an ante, see your two cards and three shared ones, then call with twice your ante or fold. The best five-card hand wins, and the house edge is about 2.16%.

  1. 1Place an ante. You and the dealer get two cards each, and three shared cards are turned up.
  2. 2Call by adding twice your ante, or fold and lose the ante.
  3. 3Two more shared cards are dealt. The better five-card hand wins.

05Ante, then play or fold

How do you play Three Card Poker?

You and the dealer each get three cards. After seeing yours, you either make a Play bet equal to your ante or fold, and the better hand wins. A simple strategy is to play with queen-six-four or better and fold anything lower. The house edge on Ante and Play is about 3.4%.

  1. 1Place an ante and get three cards face down.
  2. 2Look at your hand. Make a Play bet equal to the ante, or fold.
  3. 3Your hand is compared with the dealer's and the better one wins.
How often each Three Card Poker hand is dealt
HandChance
Straight flush0.22%
Three of a kind0.24%
Straight3.26%
Flush4.96%
Pair16.94%
High card74.39%

With three cards, a straight is rarer than a flush, so it ranks higher.

06Three dice, many bets

How do you play Sic Bo?

Three dice are shaken and you bet on the result: Small (a total of 4 to 10), Big (11 to 17), a specific total, a number or a triple. Small and Big carry a 2.78% edge and both lose when a triple lands. A specific triple often pays 150:1 or more.

  1. 1Bet on Small (total 4 to 10), Big (11 to 17), a total, a number or a triple.
  2. 2The dealer shakes the three dice.
  3. 3Bets that match the result are paid. Small and Big both lose when a triple lands.

Two ways to play

Should you play live or RNG?

Pick live if you want to watch a real dealer run the table on camera, with every card and spin shown as it happens. Pick RNG if you want faster rounds at your own pace, dealt by a random number generator. The house edge depends on the game's rules, not on who deals.

Live dealer

A real dealer runs the table on camera. Rounds take longer, and you see every card and spin as it happens. Pick live if you want to watch the game being dealt.

RNG

Software deals the cards or spins the wheel using a random number generator. Rounds are faster and you play at your own pace. Pick RNG if you want quick rounds.

The house edge is set by the game's rules, not by whether a person or software deals it.
