Online slots: how the reels pay out.
An online slot uses a random number generator to pick the symbols on every spin. Over the long run most slots pay back 94% to 97% of what is staked, which is their RTP. How often they pay depends on their volatility. This guide explains both, plus paylines, free spins and jackpots.

Slot types
Six kinds of slot, explained
They all run on the same random number generator. What changes is the reel layout, how wins are counted and how big the swings are.
Classic slots
Three reels and a handful of paylines, built like the old fruit machines. Few features, so they're easy to follow.
- Typical RTP
- 95% to 97%
- Volatility
- Low to medium
Video slots
Five reels, a theme and bonus rounds. This is the most common kind of slot, and most of the lobby falls into it.
- Typical RTP
- 94% to 97%
- Volatility
- Any
Megaways
The height of each reel changes on every spin, so the number of ways to win changes too, up to 117,649. Usually high volatility.
- Typical RTP
- 95% to 96.5%
- Volatility
- High
Cluster pays
Wins come from groups of matching symbols touching each other. Winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, which can set off another win.
- Typical RTP
- 95% to 97%
- Volatility
- Medium to high
Progressive jackpots
A small part of every bet goes into a jackpot that keeps growing until someone wins it. The base game's RTP is lower to pay for the pot.

- Volatility
- High
Bonus buy
Pay a fixed price, often around 100 times your stake, to go straight into the free spins round instead of waiting for it to trigger.

01The basics
How do online slots work?
When you press Spin, a random number generator picks the result straight away. The spinning reels are animation that shows a result already decided. Each spin is independent, so nothing that happened before changes the next one. Over the long run most slots pay back 94% to 97% of stakes.
02Return to player
What is RTP, and what does it cost?
RTP is the share of all stakes a slot pays back over a very large number of spins. The rest is the house edge. A 96% slot keeps about ₹4 of every ₹100 staked over time, although any one session can land far above or below that.
- 97% RTP₹30
- 96% RTP₹40
- 94% RTP₹60
- 92% RTP₹80
- 88% RTP₹120
Some games come in several RTP versions and the casino chooses which one to run. The info screen shows the figure for the version in front of you.
03How wins are spread
What does volatility mean?
Volatility tells you how a slot spreads its wins. Two games with the same RTP can feel completely different: a low-volatility slot pays small wins often and suits long sessions, while a high-volatility one goes long stretches with little, then pays a big win, usually in the bonus round.
Low
- Wins
- Often

- Small
Frequent small wins keep your balance steady. Good for long, relaxed sessions.
Medium

- Mixed
A mix of small and bigger wins. Most slots sit here.
High
- Wins
- Rarely

- Large
Long runs with little or nothing, then the occasional big win, usually in the bonus round.
04Counting wins
Paylines, ways and clusters
Slots count wins in one of three ways. The paytable tells you which one a game uses.
Paylines
Fixed lines across the reels. Matching symbols usually have to start on the leftmost reel and run left to right.
Ways
Matching symbols on neighbouring reels win in any row, which gives 243 or 1,024 ways on a five-reel game. Megaways games change the count every spin.
Clusters
A group of matching symbols touching each other wins, wherever it sits on the grid.
05Features
Free spins and bonus rounds
Three or more scatter symbols usually trigger free spins, where the game spins for you without taking a stake. Most of a high-volatility slot's big wins come from this round. These are the terms you'll see in the paytable.
- Wild
- Stands in for other symbols to complete a win.
- Scatter
- Pays or triggers a feature from anywhere on the reels. Three or more usually start free spins.
- Multiplier
- Multiplies a win, for example 2x or 5x.
- Bonus buy
- A fixed-price way into the bonus round, often around 100 times your stake.
06Growing prizes
How do progressive jackpots work?
A small share of every bet goes into the jackpot, so the prize keeps growing until somebody wins it. Then it drops back to a starting amount and grows again. Because part of each stake funds the pot, the base game's RTP is lower, often 88% to 94%.
07Playing smart
Is there a way to win at slots?
No. Nothing beats the random number generator over time, and spins are never due. What you can control is how much you play and which games you choose: pick versions with an RTP of 96% or above, set a loss limit if you use autoplay, and treat bonus buys as a bigger risk.
- Check the RTP in the info screen before you play, and pick a version at 96% or above where you can.
- Spins are never due. Each one is independent of the last, however long it has been since a win.
- If you use autoplay, set a loss limit so it stops on its own.
- Treat a bonus buy as a bigger and faster risk: you pay roughly 100 spins' worth up front.

RTP, or return to player, is the share of all stakes a slot pays back over a very large number of spins. A 96% RTP slot pays back ₹96 for every ₹100 staked in the long run and keeps ₹4. Over a short session your result can be far above or below that.
