Markets explained

What can I bet on at the Champions Trophy?

You can bet on match odds, the tournament winner, runs in the first 10 overs, innings runs, the top batter and bowler, and more. Each market is open pre-match and most stay open live. Back the team you think will win, or lay the one you think won't.

  • Match odds

Back the team you think will win, or lay the one you think won't. Ties are rare, and a Super Over decides a tied knockout.

In day-night games, the toss and dew both matter.

  • Tournament winner

Pick the team that lifts the trophy. The prices move after every group game.

An early loss hurts more here than in a longer event.

  • First 10 overs runs

Bet over or under a runs line for the first 10 overs of an innings.

Two new balls help seamers, so compare the line with recent starts at the venue.

  • Innings runs

Bet over or under a line for a team's total.

Lines come from the pitch report. Check whether the pitch is fresh or has been used.

  • Top batter and bowler

Back the leading run-scorer or wicket-taker, for one match or the whole tournament.

Top-order batters face the most balls.

  • Group winner and to qualify

Bet on who tops a group, or which teams reach the semi-finals.

Net run rate separates teams that finish level on points.

How it works

How does Champions Trophy betting work?

You back an outcome at a decimal price, and your return is your stake times the price: ₹1,000 at 2.20 returns ₹2,200. You can also lay a team, betting that it won't win; lay ₹1,000 at 2.20 and your liability is ₹1,200. Match bets settle on the day, outrights after the final.

You can also lay a team, which means betting that it won't win. Lay ₹1,000 at 2.20 and your liability is ₹1,200. The bet slip shows that number before you confirm.

Match bets settle on the day of the match. Outrights such as the tournament winner settle after the final.

Tournament format

How does the Champions Trophy format work?

Eight teams play in two groups of four, and each team plays the other three in its group once. The top two in each group reach the semi-finals, and the semi-final winners meet in the final. Teams qualify through recent ODI results, such as the rankings or the standings at the previous World Cup.

  1. Stage 1

    Group stage

8 teams in two groups of four

Each team plays the other three once. The top two in each group go through.

  2. Stage 2

    Semi-finals

The top two from each group

Two knockout matches. The winners meet in the final.

  3. Stage 3

    Final

    One match

    Decides the Champions Trophy winner.

With only three group games each, an early loss hurts more than in a longer event, and outright prices shift after every result.

Fielding restrictions

How do the three phases of an ODI work?

An ODI innings has three fielding phases. Overs 1 to 10 allow two fielders outside the circle and help seamers. Overs 11 to 40 allow four, and spinners and partnerships take over. Overs 41 to 50 allow five, with the fastest scoring and the most risk.

  1. Phase 1

    Overs 1 to 10

    2 fielders outside the circle

Two new balls and attacking fields. Seamers get the most help.

  2. Phase 2

    Overs 11 to 40

    4 fielders outside the circle

Spinners and partnerships take over. Wickets here move live prices the most.

  3. Phase 3

    Overs 41 to 50

    5 fielders outside the circle

The fastest scoring and the most risk. Wickets in hand at 40 overs often decide the total.

Conditions

What should I check before a match?

Check the playing XIs, because each front-line bowler bowls ten overs; the toss and whether the winner chose to bat or bowl; whether the pitch is fresh, which favours batting, or used, which helps spinners; dew in day-night games; and the weather, since a match needs 20 overs a side for a result.

  • 01

    Playing XIs

Each front-line bowler bowls ten overs, so one injury leaves a big gap.

  • 02

    The toss

Check who won it and whether they chose to bat or bowl.

  • 03

    Fresh pitches

Early in the tournament, fresh pitches favour batting and push totals up.

  • 04

    Used pitches

Pitches used several times later in the tournament start to help spinners.

  • 05

    Dew

In day-night games, dew can help the team batting second.

  • 06

    Weather

Rain can shorten a match. Under 20 overs a side, there's no result.

Rain rules and settlement

What happens if rain or a tie hits?

An ODI needs at least 20 overs a side for a DLS result. If there's a result, match odds settle on it. If not, the teams share the points and match odds bets are void. A tie goes to a Super Over, which decides match odds only.

  • Rain and DLS

An ODI needs at least 20 overs a side for a DLS result. Match odds then settle on that official result.

  • No result

If there's no result, the teams share the points. Match odds bets are void and stakes are returned.

  • Super Over

A Super Over decides match odds. Markets for the 50 overs settle on those overs only.

  • Reserve days

Knockout matches often have a reserve day, so a rained-off semi-final or final may be finished the next day.

  • Overs not bowled

A session whose over is never bowled is void, unless its result was already decided.

  • Group and outright markets

Group markets settle at the end of the group stage. Tournament outrights settle after the final.

Side by side

How is it different from a T20 event?

The Champions Trophy is a 50-over event with eight teams, so favourites win more often than at a T20 World Cup and their match odds are shorter. Totals and top-batter markets have more room to develop, live prices move more gradually, and a rain result needs 20 overs a side rather than five.
