The short version

Key takeaways

  1. 1The ODI World Cup is a 50-over tournament held every four years, and it runs for about six weeks.
  2. 2King Exchange has pre-match, live and outright markets for every edition.
  3. 3Favourites reach the knockouts more often than in T20 events, because one loss rarely ends a campaign.
  4. 4Under DLS, an ODI needs at least 20 overs a side for a result.

Markets explained

What can I bet on at the ODI World Cup?

You can bet on match odds, the tournament winner, teams to reach the semi-finals, the top tournament batter and bowler, and more. Match odds is the main market: back the team you think will win, or lay the one you think won't. A tie goes to a Super Over, which decides the market.

  • Match odds

Back the team you think will win, or lay the one you think won't. A tie goes to a Super Over, which decides the market.

In day-night games, the toss and dew can matter as much as team strength.

  • Tournament winner

Pick the team that lifts the trophy. It's the biggest outright market in one-day cricket.

Hosts and teams used to the local conditions often go deep.

  • To reach the semi-finals

Back a team to finish in the top four of the group stage.

A lower-risk way to back a strong side whose title price is short.

  • Top tournament batter

Pick the player who scores the most runs across the World Cup.

Top-three batters from semi-final teams get the most innings.

  • Top tournament bowler

Pick the player who takes the most wickets across the World Cup.

Powerplay and death bowlers get the most chances to take wickets.

  • Innings and 10-over runs

Bet over or under a line for a team's total, or for its score in the first 10 overs.

Compare the line with recent totals at the same ground, not the tournament average.

How it works

How does World Cup betting work?

You back an outcome at a decimal price, and your return is your stake times the price: ₹1,000 at 3.50 returns ₹3,500. You can also lay a team, betting that it won't win; lay ₹1,000 at 3.50 and your liability is ₹2,500. Outrights such as the tournament winner settle after the final.

You can also lay a team, which means betting that it won't win. Lay ₹1,000 at 3.50 and your liability is ₹2,500. The bet slip shows that number before you confirm.

Match bets settle on the day of the match. Outrights such as the tournament winner settle after the final.

Tournament format

How does the ODI World Cup format work?

In 2019 and 2023, ten teams played each other once, nine matches each, and the top four reached the semi-finals. Earlier editions had bigger fields with a Super Six or Super Eight stage. The hosts and the top-ranked ODI sides qualify directly, and the other places go through a qualifying tournament that usually includes some Associate teams.

  1. Stage 1

    Group stage

    10 teams, 9 matches each

Every team plays every other team once. The top four go through.

  2. Stage 2

    Semi-finals

    The top four teams

Two knockout matches. The winners meet in the final.

  3. Stage 3

    Final

    One match

    Decides the World Cup champion.

With nine group games each, one early loss rarely ends a campaign, so outright prices can recover.

Fielding restrictions

How do the three phases of an ODI work?

An ODI innings has three fielding phases. In overs 1 to 10 only two fielders can stand outside the circle, so runs come quickly. Overs 11 to 40 allow four, scoring slows and wickets move live prices most. Overs 41 to 50 allow five, as batters attack at the death.

  1. Phase 1

    Overs 1 to 10

    2 fielders outside the circle

Runs come quickly while only two fielders can stand in the deep.

  2. Phase 2

    Overs 11 to 40

    4 fielders outside the circle

Scoring slows. Wickets here usually move live prices the most.

  3. Phase 3

    Overs 41 to 50

    5 fielders outside the circle

The second burst of fast scoring, as batters attack at the death.

Price movers

What moves ODI World Cup odds?

Wickets between overs 11 and 40 usually move live ODI prices most. Before and during a match, the toss and dew in day-night games, pitch wear that helps spinners, the confirmed XIs, form and fitness over six weeks, and net run rate, which separates teams level on points, all shift the odds.

  • 01

    Toss and dew

In day-night games, dew usually helps the team batting second, so the toss matters.

  • 02

    Pitch wear

Pitches slow down later in a match and start to help spinners.

  • 03

    Confirmed XIs

A missing front-line bowler leaves ten overs for someone else to cover.

  • 04

    Middle-over wickets

Losing wickets between overs 11 and 40 usually moves the live price more than anything else.

  • 05

    Form and fitness

Over six weeks, squad depth and travel between venues start to tell.

  • 06

    Net run rate

Teams level on points are separated by net run rate, so big wins count.

Rain rules and settlement

What happens if rain or a tie hits?

An ODI needs at least 20 overs a side for a DLS result. If there's a result, match odds settle on it. If not, the teams share the points and match odds bets are void. A tie goes to a Super Over, which decides match odds only.

  • Rain and DLS

An ODI needs at least 20 overs a side for a DLS result. Match odds then settle on that official result.

  • No result

If there's no result, the teams share the points. Match odds bets are void and stakes are returned.

  • Super Over

A Super Over decides match odds. Markets for the 50 overs settle on those overs only.

  • Reserve days

Knockout matches often have a reserve day, so a rained-off semi-final or final may be finished the next day.

  • Overs not bowled

A session whose over is never bowled is void, unless its result was already decided.

  • Outrights

Tournament winner, semi-finalists, top batter and top bowler settle after the final.

How does it compare with other ICC events?

The ODI World Cup is the longest ICC event, at about six weeks with nine group games per team in recent editions, so upsets are rarest there. The Champions Trophy has eight teams over about three weeks, and the T20 World Cup has up to 20 teams and the most upsets.
